The challenges encountered by the Department of Defense (DoD) Military Health System during its implementation of AHLTA will be described and the applicability of DoD's lessons learned for shaping the federal and national data sharing efforts in support of the President's agenda for the establishment of electronic health records will be discussed. The power of centralized data storage to grant unprecedented access to enterprise wide patient-centric health data to increase efficacy of treatment, monitor the health of the beneficiary population and improve the quality of care will be explored.
