Description:
On June 10, 2008 CMS launched a five year demonstration initiative that aims to reward delivery of high-quality care supported by the adoption and use of electronic health records in physician practices. This initiative expands upon the foundation created by the Medicare Care Management Performance (MCMP) Demonstration. The goal of this 5-year demonstration is to foster the implementation and adoption of EHRs and health information technology (HIT) more broadly as effective vehicles not only to improve the quality of care provided, but also to transform the way medicine is practiced and delivered.

Before implementing an EHR, physicians and practice managers should analyze the business and clinical operations currently in place this is called performing a "workflow analysis. Some EHR vendors conduct workflow analysis as part of the system implementation process. But it is in the practice's best interest to perform a workflow analysis prior to the HER Systems implementation. to identify areas where the practice operates well and poorly.
