Mention clinical dashboard and an analogy to a jetliner cockpit may be quickly drawn by visionaries in the healthcare industry. It only makes sense that just as the wide array of dials and gauges provide the airline pilot with a wealth of detail regarding the real-time operation of the plane so too can the a clinical dashboard provide management with a real time view of key, "delivery of care" performance indicators. In practice however, the airliner pilot will tell you that the demands on his attention only leave time to focus on a handful of critical instruments. Every other indicator is simply for reference when and if a problem arises. This same principal holds true in the fast paced clinical environment. In this session, we will discuss the results from an empirical study of recent Lean and Six Sigma projects, and try to separate the hype from the real value that organizations are experiencing with these initiatives. We will share the actual results of the ME-PI survey of hospitals and health systems who are using these initiatives in practice, and describe obstacles to their implementation, key success factors, lessons learned, and performance metrics that are being impacted.
