Saturday, April 4, 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM

Jonathan Bagby, MSN, MBA-HCM, RN-BC

Show/Hide Details    Add to Outlook Calendar

Description:
It has been almost 10 years since the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) implemented its Bar Code Medication Administration system nationwide. Numerous unintended consequences were uncovered while moving from a single site pilot project to an implementation of over 170 facilities. The Bar Code Resource Office was established in 2003 to manage strategic direction of the software, develop quality control measures, and function as a liaison between the individual facilities, software developers, and VA management. With its Bar Code Medication Administration software in use for nearly 10 years and over 1 billion doses administered, VA has many lessons learned to share with other facilities looking to implement or improve bedside bar coding.

Saturday, April 4, 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM

Peggy White, RN, MN
Sally Remus, RN, MscN

Show/Hide Details    Add to Outlook Calendar

Description:
This presentation will describe how the Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care (HOBIC) initiative is creating the opportunity to change the way nurses practice through the provision of information that is available to nurses at the point of care in real time. This initiative is working with health care organizations to implement the electronic collection of standardized evidence-based outcomes reflective of nursing practice. In the province of Ontario, the focus is beginning to shift from what care was provided to an understanding of how nursing practice makes a difference in the health of people. Nurses should seek and leverage new opportunities, such as HOBIC, so that the direct contribution by nurses to patient outcomes is better understood and recognized.

National Project Director, C-HOBIC
Sally Remus, RN, MscN
Director, Clinical Informatics, St. Michael's Hospital

Level:
Intermediate

Objectives:

  • Detail the opportunities and challenges associated with the design and delivery of electronic clinical documentation systems that are optimized through incorporating evidence based practice nurse-patient sensitive outcome measures
  • Discuss the challenges and benefits of collecting standardized information in electronic clinical documentation systems and using this information to inform and facilitate care decisions that are safe, effective and efficient
  • Examine how nurse leaders are integrating this information into decision-making regarding the quality of care on their units
